NIC stands for National Informatics Centre. It is a premier Indian government department under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The NIC provides infrastructure, IT Consultancy, IT Services including but not limited to architecture, design, development and implementation of IT Systems to Central Government Departments and State Governments thus enabling delivery of government services to Citizens and pioneering the initiatives of Digital India. Research for betterment of citizens and Government department and organizations is also carried out by scientists working in NIC.
NIC maintains the National Portal of India. The portal contains the Constitution of India, and has a design objective to a single point to access the information and services of the Government of India.
NIC also provides a wide range of e-governance services to the Government of India and State Governments. These services include:
- e-Government infrastructure: NIC provides and maintains the e-Government infrastructure for the Government of India and State Governments. This infrastructure includes the National Knowledge Network (NKN), the National Data Centre (NDC), and the Government of India Cloud.
- e-Government applications: NIC develops and maintains a wide range of e-Government applications for the Government of India and State Governments. These applications include the Income Tax e-Filing portal, the Passport Seva portal, and the Aadhaar portal.
- e-Governance consultancy: NIC provides e-Governance consultancy services to the Government of India and State Governments. These services include helping them to identify their e-Governance needs, develop e-Governance strategies, and implement e-Governance solutions.
NIC is a vital part of the Government of India's e-Governance initiatives. It plays a key role in delivering government services to citizens electronically and in making the Government of India more efficient and transparent.
